Let’s talk managing deadlines– which isn’t as simple as itsounds when you’re applying to ten different colleges, each with their own unique application deadlines. As much as I’d love to be able to snap my fingers and make sure students everywhere never miss a deadline again, the reality is that YOU need to be an active participant in yourapplication process to make sure that you don’t miss any important deadlines. After all, at the end of the day, no one can hit that submit button but you!
The good news is that I’ve got a great tool you can use to help you stay on track: Common App onTrack. While the Common App’s mobile app was first launched in 2015, I find that many students still don’t take advantage of this excellent resource throughout their application process. During today’s post, I’d like to introduce you to the Common App mobile app: Common App onTrack, and encourage you to put it to use!
Common App onTrack is available on both Apple iOS 9+ and Google Andriod 4.4+ operating systems. You can find it in the itunes App stores or Google Play.
In general, Common App onTrack allows you to:
-Monitor the completion status of the various parts of your application
-Edit your college list in the “My Colleges” section
-Generate reminders and notifications to help keep you on track throughout the application process (!!).
-Contact the Applicant Solutions Center quickly and conveniently.
-Check details about the colleges on your list, like what items are still incomplete.
-Manage your Recommenders
-View tutorials to walk you through the different parts of the application.
Within the My Colleges section of the App, you can choose to have your colleges listed by deadline, or in alphabetical order. If it isn’t obvious, my advice is that you have them listed by deadline.
You can also allow the App to send you push notifications, meaning to alert you of deadlines and other important information without you having to actually log in to the app.
I think it’s fair to say that most students in 2019 are better at checking their phones than they are at checking their calendar or email. Having your deadlines right at your fingertips is a great way to keep you on track (or should I say, onTrack) and make sure that no deadlines are missed.
I should also note that you are not able to edit your Common App itself within the mobile app, which is probably a good thing. Working on a screen so small and with limited keyboards leaves more room for error. A good way to think of Common App onTrack is as the official companion app to the Common App, it’s not a standalone that works in place of the Application itself.
And here’s a tip that I promise to touch on more in a future post- it’s generally better to apply earlier rather than later. So, if your app is ready to go and all of your supplemental materials have been submitted, there’s no reason to wait! In fact, many colleges are starting to encourage that students apply by their “Priority Application Deadline” in order to be automatically considered for institutional grants and scholarships. That means the earlier you apply, the more likely you are to receive a strong financial aid award.
Be sure to submit your apps on time and use Common App onTrack to help you stay organized!
